Vintage Notes

The 2016 growing season was near-perfect with an early start and ideal weather conditions throughout. A relatively steady and mild July and August and then a series of warm days at the end of the growing season, vineyards were able to progress to perfect ripeness. The season wrapped up beautifully as the first significant fall rainstorm arrived on October 14th – just after the last of our grapes were picked.

2017 E.B.A. (Extended Barrel Aged) Petite Sirah

2017 E.B.A. (Extended Barrel Aged) Petite Sirah

Napa Valley Petite Sirah

At Biale, we use an acronym–E.B.A. –Extended Barrel Aged. In certain vintages we hold back a small number of barrels of our crème de la crème of Petite Sirah to allow for extra development – up to 14 months extra. The extra time in barrel is very kind to the deep fruit and sturdy tannins of Petite Sirah – (well, the right Petite Sirah) adding an extra dimension of fine texture and synthesis with the deep core of dark fruit the grape variety is famous for. Black berry, dark plum, fig, black tea, vanilla, cocoa powder and purple flowers. Soft and weighty entry with opulent black fruits layered with polished tannins that build to a long, wet finish.

Vintage Notes

The 2017 growing season started out with ideal weather conditions. After a very wet winter, there was plenty of moisture available to the vines which made for vigorous canopy growth and a healthy crop load. Summer temperatures were well above average and then a series of heat spikes at the end of the growing season quickly pushed the Zinfandel to perfect ripeness.

2018 Palisades Vineyard Petite Sirah

2018 Palisades Vineyard Petite Sirah

Calistoga, Napa Valley Petite Sirah

Domenico Barberis came to Calistoga in 1902 and soon thereafter was able to start a vineyard and ranch as well as his large family on a scenic property on Horns Creek. This eastern side of Calistoga features the spectacular geological formation named the Palisades. These dramatic west-facing cliffs are composed of igneous rock and were formed from volcanic upheaval millennia ago. A dramatic vineyard which produces dramatic wines. Deep saturated purple color with dusty notes of minerals, black berry cobbler, dried blueberry, violets, quince and currants. A full/broad tannin structure leads to a long and lingering finish. This masculine Petite Sirah is pleasurable now and built for the long haul. 141 cases produced.

Vintage Notes

Seamless season of heavenly hangtime and phenomenal phenolic development. February saw abundant rains, followed by lots of filtered light in spring and early summer. Both bud break and flowering occurred a bit late, but under ideal weather conditions, creating plentiful and even fruit set. Summer brought generous sun during the day and cooler marine influences, virtually uninterrupted by major heat spikes. The relatively mild summer followed by extended fall sunshine and moderate heat created near-ideal conditions for winemakers to allow their fruit to accumulate flavor complexity with gradual increases in sugar levels. Volume is looking great, up 20-30% increase over average crop quantity.

2017 Petite Sirah Dessert Wine

2017 Petite Sirah Dessert Wine

Napa Valley Petite Sirah

As in traditional Port making, the ripe Petite Sirah grapes were gently crushed by being repeatedly walked around upon in bins or “lagares” for approximately 15 to 20 minutes three times per day by a team of female treaders, or “Treadettes” (as in treading, or, “cavort-ing”). High-proof grape brandy is then added to stop fermentation before dryness at 10 degrees Brix in order to impart the wine’s balanced natural sweetness. The fruit is gently pressed and aged in neutral French oak barrels for 18 months. Inky dark purple, aromatic black currants, blueberry, graham cracker, cedar, hints of clove, mocha, and black tea. Medium sweetness, firm structure, balanced fruit, acidity and alcohol. This wine is made more in a vintage style as opposed to an aged tawny.

2018 Royal Punishers Petite Sirah

2018 Royal Punishers Petite Sirah

Napa Valley Petite Sirah

Petite Sirah was the most commonly planted grape in Napa Valley for nearly a century and now we are witnessing a resurgence and new appreciation for this historic hero variety! Known for its dark color, firm structure, and deep blue and black fruit flavors, it is perfectly suited to Napa Valley’s moderate and dry growing season. The 2018 Royal Punishers has a deep, blackish blue color profile. Aromas of currants, blueberry, quince, violets, figs, molasses and graphite. The entry is weighty with a broad mid-palate structure which has layers of ripe, black fruit flavors. The oak profile is balanced and the tannins are medium grained which hold the fruit profile and carry a long, lingering finish.
