2019 Clementina White Wine

2019 Clementina White Wine

Oak Knoll District, Napa Valley Greco

In Italy, it is believed that Greco has its origins in ancient Greece. However, it is identified as one of the great white grapes of Tufo, Campania in Southern Italy. Complex, lean, and graceful, Greco wines are traditionally known to cellar extremely well up to 10 years. The alluvial soils and moderate climate of the Oak Knoll District are ideal conditions for a wide variety of vinifera grapes. Greco is a new entry that shows wonderful promise for future winemaking. This wine is a tribute to Clementina Biale (1929-2017), wife of Aldo Biale and matriarch of the Biale Family. A late ripener with a firm backbone of acidity, our Napa Valley, Oak Knoll District Estate Greco has a bright golden hue. It is a medium weight white wine with notes of white peach, honey suckle, pear, lemon meringue, wet stone, chalk and other mineral notes.

Vintage Notes

A long, warm summer and mild finish to the season. The beginning of the 2019 growing season was defined by copious rainfall and late soil moisture. The long, warm summer saw very few extreme heat events, with foggy mornings setting the stage for vibrant and expressive wines. The long, relatively mild finish to the season, not without its moments of unpredictability, helped to preserve freshness and finesse in the fruit with abundant hang time teasing out great color, structure and soft tannins. Volume is looking to be about average to a little less than average. All in all, exceptional fruit with bright acidity and ample texture promises an amazing vintage.

Ageability

The wine has a natural phenolic structure to it along with a racey acidity which makes it ideal for food pairings and bottle aging.

2016 Gaudi-Carli Barbera

2016 Gaudi-Carli Barbera

Calistoga Appellation, Napa Valley Barbera

At Gaudi Carli in Calistoga, we are dealing with a little patch of the only old vine Barbera we know of in Napa Valley and it is loaded with character. Who we have to thank for sticking with this 80 year-old vineyard is the Torrigino family, who together over decades, have kept the scant last acre of Gaudi Carli’s original vineyards going. Just amazing it’s still there…Rustic red fruits fill the nose along with Bing cherry, plum, Iris, cinnamon and rood beer. Medium light bodied with fleshy tannins lend way to some, earthier Barbera flavors of cassis, blackberry and porcini mushroom. This Old-World style wine has a nice balance of fresh acidity which makes for a mouthwatering finish. *The 2018 vintage will be released Fall 2020

Vintage Notes

The 2016 growing season was near-perfect with an early start and ideal weather conditions throughout. A relatively steady and mild July and August and then a series of warm days at the end of the growing season, vineyards were able to progress to perfect ripeness. The season wrapped up beautifully as the first significant fall rainstorm arrived on October 14th – just after the last of our grapes were picked.

Vintage Notes

The 2017 growing season started out with ideal weather conditions. After a very wet winter, there was plenty of moisture available to the vines which made for vigorous canopy growth and a healthy crop load. Summer temperatures were well above average and then a series of heat spikes at the end of the growing season quickly pushed the grapes to perfect ripeness.

The lovely finish is the signature of this elegant and remarkably balanced red wine blend that is immediately drinkable and worthy of 5-7 years more.

2018 Nonna’s Vineyard Sangiovese

2018 Nonna’s Vineyard Sangiovese

Oak Knoll District, Napa Valley Sangiovese

In 1992, one year after we started the winery, Aldo converted a small vineyard block behind his house to Sangiovese and named it after his mother. It turned out to be so good that we broke from our Zinfandel course and added it to the Biale repertoire. This wine has aromas and flavors of Bing cherries, rhubarb, strawberries and red plum with hints of chamomile and savory spice. Medium bodied with a clean and bright entry. Full textural tannins with nice acidity make this a perfect wine for pairing with your favorite recipes. Drink now or cellar through 2022. Available to Black Chicken Society members.

Vintage Notes

Seamless season of heavenly hangtime and phenomenal phenolic development. February saw abundant rains, followed by lots of filtered light in spring and early summer. Both bud break and flowering occurred a bit late, but under ideal weather conditions, creating plentiful and even fruit set. Summer brought generous sun during the day and cooler marine influences, virtually uninterrupted by major heat spikes. The relatively mild summer followed by extended fall sunshine and moderate heat created near-ideal conditions for winemakers to allow their fruit to accumulate flavor complexity with gradual increases in sugar levels.
